Tips to Help Your Child Thrive in Swimming Lessons

As a mum of three and a swim teacher, I know just how exciting and sometimes chaotic swimming lessons can be. Lessons are usually short, around 25 to 30 minutes making every moment count is key. Here’s a few little things I’ve learned along the way with my own kids and teaching others.

1. Start with a well-fed child
Nothing sinks a lesson faster than a rumbling tummy! A light snack or meal beforehand keeps energy up and focus sharp.

2. Arrive early
Give your child a few minutes to settle in, use the toilet and adjust to the pool environment. A calm start means less stress and more fun, for them and for you!

3. Keep a designated swim bag
A ready-to-go swim bag is a lifesaver. Goggles, caps, towels, everything in one place means no frantic hunting and more time for splashing.

4. Choose comfortable, well-fitted bathers
Pick bathers that fit well and don’t need constant adjusting. Chlorine-resistant swimmers without elastic last longer. Comfort equals focus (and less fuss!)

5. Use a swim cap for longer hair
Hair in the face is one of the biggest distractions during lessons. Silicone swim caps are gentle and keep hair tucked out of the way. Not ready for a cap? A secure ponytail or braid works wonders!

6. Fit goggles properly before lessons
A good goggle fit can make or break a lesson. They should sit snugly, with no hair or cap underneath to prevent leaks. Adjustable goggles are a must and as cute as novelty styles are, I’ve found that they rarely seal properly!

7. Practise outside of lessons
Extra pool time helps children gain confidence and comfort in the water. Even simple water play can reinforce skills and it keeps swimming fun!

8. Celebrate effort and be patient
Every child learns at their own pace. Focus on effort, progress and confidence. A little encouragement goes a long way, sometimes a high-five or a cheer is all it takes to turn a tricky lesson into a win.

Swimming is such a wonderful skill and with a few simple tips, lessons can be more enjoyable for both children and parents.
